Opalescence® Teeth Whitening
Opalescence® is a proven teeth whitening treatment that effectively removes organic stains on the teeth and significantly enhances the brightness of the smile. The use of light activation with the gel provided is optional and can be decided by the dentist.
Opalescence® is a fast and easy treatment. The bleaching gel is applied to the teeth for approximately 45 minutes. It is completely safe and includes potassium nitrate and fluoride to protect dental enamel during the treatment.

What is the procedure for performing the Opalescence ® treatment?
The Opalescence whitening gel consists of 38% hydrogen peroxide and potassium nitrate. Following an in-office treatment, a gel and toothpaste with lower concentrations of the whitening formula may be recommended for home use. The Opalescence whitening gel has a thick consistency, making it less messy to apply. Here is an overview of the procedure:
- A comprehensive cleaning will eliminate any debris on the tooth surfaces.
- Photographs will be captured to document the present shade of the teeth.
- To reveal the surfaces of important teeth, a cheek retractor will be placed.
- A protective resin will be applied onto the gums.
- The initial application of Opalescence ® whitening gel will be left on the teeth for a duration of 15 minutes.
- The gel will be suctioned off by the dentist to assess the progress of the whitening.
- Additional gel will be applied for an additional 15 minutes.
- Once again, the gel will be taken off.
- After rinsing the mouth, the final round of whitening gel will be applied.
- After the cleaning process, we will proceed to take photographs of the teeth to document their color post-treatment.
If the San Antonio dentist decides to speed up the whitening process using a specialized light, the light will be used for about 30 seconds for each gel application. The whole procedure, including the initial cleaning, should not exceed 90 minutes.
